    The Providencia wrecks ashore; its coconuts are planted, giving Palm Beach both its palm groves and its name.

Arriving in 1918, Addison Mizner authored the Mediterranean Revival vocabulary that still defines Palm Beach: hand-hewn stone, barrel-tile roofs, pecky cypress, shaded loggias, and intimate courtyards drawn from Spain, Venice, and North Africa. His work at the Everglades Club and Worth Avenue set a standard that strict landmark preservation protects to this day.
